UPS Footwear Requirements for Package Handlers

As a UPS package handler, there’s a dress code by which you have to abide. That said, not all work boots and safety shoes are compliant with the UPS dress code.

UPS-approved work shoes must be of polish leather and can either be black or brown; no other colors are allowed. There’s no obligation to get work shoes that is compliant with ANSI, ASTM, and OSHA safety standards.

On top of that, the boots/shoes must have sturdy leather uppers, be they genuine or synthetic. If you’re not fond of leather, you can opt for similar protective material.

Lastly, UPS-approved footwear must have non-slip soles and must provide good support.

UPS package handlers shouldn’t wear boots or shoes that don’t provide adequate support and protection. This includes wearing sneakers, running shoes, tennis shoes, sandals, and loafers.

UPS doesn’t really specify a certain style of the best work boots for UPS package handler that workers have to wear. You can wear cowboy boots for all you know, as long as they are compliant with the company’s criteria.

You can also opt for any brand of work boots you want, be it an Irish Setter boot, Timberland boot, Red Wing boot, or Wolverine boots.

How to Choose the Best Shoes for Package Handler?

Now that you know the specific footwear requirements set by UPS, let’s talk about the general footwear requirements that every package handler and loader/unloader must take into consideration before buying a pair of work boots.

The following factors hold weight whether you work for UPS, FedEx, DHL, or any other package delivery service. I wrote a whole article about the best work boots for delivery drivers, go check it.

Don’t you just hate it when you spend good money on a product only for it to be rendered useless after a few months? Let’s not make this the case with your next work boots purchase.

Ideally, you should opt for work boots that feature leather uppers. Why leather? Because it’s moldable, meaning it molds to the contours of your feet, ensuring comfort.

Leather is also breathable, meaning it allows for optimal airflow and moisture dissipation. If properly cared for, leather should last you a very long time.

If you’re not fond of leather work boots for whatever reason, you should opt for similar protective material. Nylon and rubber are worth considering, but they’re not as durable as leather.

As a UPS package handler, you spend a lot of time on your feet, more so than the average Joe. This puts your feet at risk of injury and fatigue, especially with concrete floors. That being said, you must prioritize comfort when shopping for work boots.

First and foremost, make sure to get the right fit. As you know, some boots run slightly big, whereas others run slightly small. So, be careful not to buy a pair of boots that don’t offer the right fit.

Next, make sure the boots offer proper support. Avoid soft foam insoles at all costs. Granted, they may feel comfy at first, but if you have biomechanical issues like overpronation or any other cause of foot pain, soft insoles won’t help.

Instead, you should opt for insoles that are on the sturdier side and that offer ample cushioning. You should also make sure that the insoles match the contours of your foot’s arch.

Additionally, look for work boots that feature a padded collar and that offer adequate ankle support. Such features help maximize comfort.

Please note that some work boots and safety shoes tend to be uncomfortable at first during the break-in period. The more you wear them, however, the more comfortable they get.

Last but certainly not least, try to avoid boots that are on the heavier side. You want a pair of work boots that will keep you nimble, and that won’t weigh you down or fatigue you.

Package handlers are always at risk of getting their toes crushed by falling heavy objects and packages. With that in mind, you need to invest in a pair of boots that can project your toe area. Steel toe, alloy toe, and composite toe boots are reliable options. Steer clear of any soft toe boot!

Old steel-toe work boots

You should also consider investing in waterproof leather boots. Why? Because dampness can cause all sorts of foot problems, including tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) and calluses.

Note that dampness doesn’t have to be a result of rain; it could be associated with wet work conditions, accidental spillages, and so forth. That said, water resistance is a safety feature that’s definitely good to have.

As a UPS package handler, you really have no use for a heavy-duty insulated boot, considering you’ll be in the warehouse throughout most of your shift.

You also have no use for boots that come with a lot of accessories, like metal chains and boot straps. Such accessories can actually increase the risk of accidents, seeing as they can easily be hooked and tangled.

Slipping or falling while carrying a heavy package can be detrimental, which is why traction is extremely important for a warehouse package handler.

For UPS package handlers, I strongly recommend work boots that feature rubber soles. Rubber delivers good traction on all sorts of terrain. Not only is it non-slip, but it’s also spongy and quite comfortable.

Where to Buy UPS Work Boots?

There are many outlets through which you can buy UPS-approved work boots and safety shoes. Amazon, Boot Barn, Shepler’s, and Work Boot Warehouse are excellent examples.

As long as you have the above-detailed UPS proper footwear requirements in mind, you shouldn’t have a hard time finding a good pair of work shoes, be it warehouse shoes for a package handler or driving shoes for a UPS driver.

If you want to get the most bang for your buck, be sure to check out my article on where to get cheap work boots.

Do You Need Steel Toe Boots for UPS?

UPS doesn’t require package handlers to wear steel toe boots. You can wear any boot as long as it meets the above-detailed UPS requirements.

It’s in your best interest, however, to invest in steel toe boots since they offer maximum protection. If steel toe boots are too heavy for your preference, consider composite toe boots.

Composite-toe boots are much lighter and can help you move smoothly, especially during peak seasons.

Does UPS Pay for Work Boots?

Unfortunately, UPS doesn’t pay package handlers for work boots.

However, if you’re in the state of California and you work for UPS Ground Freight, your employer has to pay for your safety equipment, including steel toe boots.

It’s also worth noting that UPS employees, including package handlers, are liable for discounts on UPS SmartSavings Marketplace and HAIX USA.
